During the Second World War, the peace of a small village in Northern Hungary is disrupted by the arrival of the Major, who moves into the home of the village’s highly respected fire chief, Lajos Tót, and his family. The Major arrives straight from the front lines, and the villagers are completely captivated and mesmerized by his condition and personality.

The village does everything it can to impress the officer, since the Major is the superior of the Tóts' only son, Gyula, at the front.
