A project lead by double bassist Péter Ajtai who is a prominent figure of the contemporary radical-unconventional jazz scene. The band Qiyan was founded as a free jazz variant of the Andalusian-based musical culture of predominantly Jewish female slaves who lived during the Moorish Rule.
(In classical Arabic terminology the word 'qiyan' signified those female slaves who entertained their masters both musically and sexually. Like the geishas, qiyans were also skilled individuals who practised themselves in music and poetry, known a collection of historical and literary anecdotes and were also proficient in calligraphy and techniques of shadow-play. Thus, in pre-modern society they made up the highest order of slaves, they were better appreciated than either courtesans or concubines. Most female poets of the Middle Ages were qiyans. From the melodies of qiyans trained in Medina, Baghdad or Cordoba a separate musical tradition evolved in Southern Andalusia that lasted after the abolition of slavery.)
