The permanent exhibition entitled “On the Paths of the Galut – The History of the Jews of Győr,” opened in 2026 in the Menház building in Győr, offers a comprehensive overview of the many centuries of history, human stories, and social role of the city’s Jewish community. Beginning with the settlement of Jewish families in Győr, the exhibition presents their everyday lives, economic and cultural contributions, and the ways in which they became integral participants in the city’s development, particularly in commerce, industry, and bourgeois society. Through historical objects, documents, and photographs, visitors gain insight into a world in which Jews and non-Jews lived and worked together, jointly shaping the character of the city. An important part of the exhibition is devoted to religious life and traditions, introducing Jewish customs, holidays, and communal institutions in an accessible and easily understandable way. Special emphasis is placed on the Menház building itself, which originally served as a place of care for children and the elderly in need, and whose history is a powerful example of communal solidarity and social responsibility. One of the most moving sections of the exhibition addresses the period of the Holocaust, presenting the losses suffered by the Jewish community of Győr and the consequences of deportations through personal stories, name lists, and contemporary press materials. At the same time, the exhibition does not end with tragedy: its final section focuses on survival, remembrance, and new beginnings, showing how a diminished community endured and how the Menház has once again become a living community space today. Taken as a whole, the exhibition does not merely commemorate a tragic chapter of history, but presents the full story of a rich, creative community that is inseparably connected to the history of Győr.
